LuisApril’s Story

April was diagnosed with B-cell lymphoma just weeks after turning 20. She was stunned, in disbelief, and understandably scared, as she had no idea how serious the diagnosis was or what treatment would entail. “My doctor explained that I would get very sick, feel weak, and that losing my hair would be part of the process,” she recalls.

At the time, April’s mind was consumed with thoughts of the money she had been saving for her first car, her plans for cosmetology school, and the adventures she had dreamed of with her friends. She knew everything was about to change—her life was about to take on a new “normal.”

Before deciding to shave her head, April tried using a cold cap, hoping it would preserve her hair. However, she learned it was most effective for patients with targeted cancers like breast cancer. Though she felt a bit defeated, she understood that letting go of her hair was part of the journey ahead.

That’s when Kiki’s Haus, a foundation that helps cancer patients, stepped in. They not only shaved her head but also helped her choose a wig that matched her personality, giving her a much-needed boost in both confidence and morale. “For me, the hardest part was feeling like I was losing a piece of my identity. I always felt that if my hair didn’t look good, I didn’t feel good.” But over time, she embraced her bald look and came to realize she could still rock it.

Through every high and low, April has been supported by an incredible network of family and friends. “I’ve never felt more grateful in my life,” she says, reflecting on the strength that her support system has given her throughout her journey.
