Kai’s Story
Kia was just a year old when he underwent a bone marrow transplant due to Wiskott Aldrich Syndrome, a rare genetic immunodeficiency that makes it difficult for a child’s bone marrow to produce platelets, making a child prone to bleeding. Kai was taken to the ER where it was determined he had a very low platelet count.
Kai’s parents were familiar with the illness as his older brother, Lu also had a bone marrow transplant for Wiskott Aldrich Syndrome, he passed away in February 2023 at just 22 months in Phoenix. With Kai, they chose to have his transplant at Diamond Children’s. It has been very difficult for Kai’s parents to see another one of their sons go through the same illness. They continue to remain strong and take great care of Kai just like they were for “Baba Lu.”
